Matsudaira Yasutada (松平康忠)
The Reliable Brother-in-Law of Tokugawa Ieyasu
Matsudaira Yasutada was a close relative of Tokugawa Ieyasu, both a cousin and brother-in-law, bound by both familial and loyal ties to the Tokugawa clan. Known for his unwavering commitment, he participated in key battles in Mikawa and Tōtōmi, aiding Ieyasu’s efforts in solidifying control over these regions. During the pivotal Battle of Nagashino, Yasutada followed his kin, Sakai Tadatsugu, and contributed significantly to a surprise attack on the Takeda forces, demonstrating his bravery and tactical skill.
He highly trusted by Ieyasu, Yasutada served as the senior retainer to Tokugawa Nobuyasu, Ieyasu’s eldest son. After Nobuyasu’s untimely death, Yasutada resumed his service under Ieyasu, remaining a steadfast supporter. His dedication helped fortify the Tokugawa family during its rise to power, embodying the loyalty and strength that characterized the clan’s inner circle.
